Outlook
Express does have a function to "Save
as Stationery". Unfortunately, with
the new releases and the incorporation of scripts, this
function does not operate correctly.
There's a
couple of ways to save stationery from a newsgroup,
whereby you can re-use these lovely creations in
another newsgroup post or even in your email, exactly
the way the poster has sent it to the server, keeping
the original post in tact (with
or without
scrolling). Here, I will describe what I
consider to be the best and most courteous way to
accomplish this goal, as well as stock your stationery
library for future use.
First,
it's important to note that stationers put great
effort and pride into their work. Saving
stationery in a manner that will credit the stationer
is a must in my opinion. This information
assumes you know how to launch a Text Editor (such as
Notepad or Wordpad) and are familiar with Windows well
enough to create and rename folders.
- Create
a folder on your desktop naming it,
"Saved-Stats". As you decide
which stationery you'd like to archive for future
use, create a subfolder within that folder calling
it the name of the poster. For example, you
might call the subfolder, "Ab B. Normal".
- Highlight
(select) the post you wish to save, then click File
| Save As from OE's menu options.
- Browse
to the folder you just created, and save the name of
the stationery something that will remind you what
the image is and who the poster was, i.e., Go-Gentle_AB.nws
- Notice
the default file extension is "nws".
This indicates it is a newsgroup posting. (We'll
change the extension in a moment so you can use
it for newsgroups and/or email.)
- Now,
open the folder where you saved the stat.
- Press
and hold your SHIFT key, then right-click.
Select "OPEN WITH" and scroll til you see
"Notepad". If you click Notepad and
the file is too large, it will prompt you to open
Wordpad. Either will work fine for what we're
doing. You'll notice the file opens in a
"TEXT mode".
- Next
is the important key.
The top portion of your file will look like this:
From: "Ab B. Normal" <abby@nospam.perfxion.com>
Subject: Say G'night Abby!
Date: Sun, 20 Aug 2000 02:38:58 -0500
Lines: 763
MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: multipart/related;
type="multipart/alternative";
boundary="----=_NextPart_000_0182_01C00A4F.CAF630C0"
X-Priority: 3
X-MSMail-Priority: Normal
X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express
5.50.4133.2400
X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE
V5.50.4133.2400
You're going to add an
X-Header here... and it can be placed anywhere
within the X-Headers (highlighted
in blue above),
but I like to put mine just under X-Priority
so I always know where to look. So,
at the end of X-Priority: 3... hit one return, and
type X-Sent: 1 on
a line by itself.
- Select
File
| Save As, make
sure you're in the right folder, and name the file
again: Go-Gentle_AB.nws
overwriting the existing file we just edited.
***You
must type the entire file name including the
extension in order for this to work properly.
"Okay,"
you say, "but there's still the original
poster's text in there." This can be
edited out now or just before you use it at a later
date. I like to go ahead and edit mine now, so
all I have to do next time I want to use it is
double-click and type my new message.
- To
edit you newly acquired treasure, open your Saved-Stats
folder, navigating to the Ab
B. Normal folder. Double-click the
file, which will open it in a "newsgroup"
post window. Remove any unwanted text from the
previous poster.
- Notice
if there is a link to a personal web site... I
always like to keep these in tact even if I send
them in email... or, if there isn't a personal link,
I like to include the newsgroup link where I saved
it from stating something like:
Save
the file once more overwriting the
existing file we just edited.
Now your
file should only contain the "byline" of
the original creator and you should be ready to post
it to any newsgroup anywhere.
- To
save this file for email usage, we'll save again,
but this time, we'll save the file as an "eml"
document, by naming it: Go-Gentle_AB.eml
***Again, you must
type the entire file name including the extension in
order for this to work properly.
Now, the
next time you're sending a post or an email you'd
like to snazzy up with an email stationery, simply
go to your Saved-Stats
folder,
select the stationer's folder you've borrowed from,
and double-click the appropriate filename with the
appropriate file extension.
*
Remember "nws" extensions are for
newsgroups and "eml" extensions are for
email.*
Complete
the headers of the file, filling in the
newsgroup/server and/or email addy, depending on
your usage, and you're ready to go. The first
time or two you try this, you may want to send
yourself an email to make sure you've saved
everything appropriately. If not, step back
through these instructions and try again.
